2 Known US Breeders to Supply
Boer Bucks to North Cotabato
by: Manny F. Piņol / July 26, 2007
Two prominent Boer Goat breeders in Northern California, the United States, have been asked to supply the Province of North Cotabato with fullblood Boer bucks this year.
Kim Dougherty of the Rawhide Ranch of Palmdale, California and Rebecca Cogswell of the Moonstone Ranch also of Northern California have been involved in the breeding of Boer Goats in the US and are prominent members of the American Boer Goat Association (ABGA).
Dougherty and Cogswell, who both participate in the different show circuits in Northern California, are friends who also help one another in improving their stocks.
The Province of North Cotabato needs about 200 fullblood Boer bucks to start its massive Small Ruminants Program aimed at helping farmers take advantage of the growing demand for meat goats both in the local and regional markets.
Under the program, the imported Boer bucks will be distributed to 200 goat breeders in the province who will comprise the first group of multiplier farms.
The fullblood Boer bucks will be mated to upgraded local does to produce half-breed Boer does which in turn will be distributed to another group of farmers.
Under North Cotabato's ambitious Small Ruminants Program, the province hopes to become the Number 1 producer of meat goats in the country within the next 10 years.
Both Dougherty and Cogswell have been shipping their goats to the Philippines specifically to the Braveheart Farms of Vice Governor Manny Pinol, who now owns the 2007 National Boer Champions Best Buck, Best Doe, Best Junior Buck and Best Junior Doe.
